At first glance, Flat Bocce might look like a familiar lawn game. There’s a target, players take turns throwing pieces, and the goal is to land closest. But once you start playing, it becomes clear that Flat Bocce is a unique member of the leisure sport family.

The game takes inspiration from classic bocce, but it introduces a series of innovations that transform how the game is played. From its unique equipment to its scoring system and limitless court possibilities, Flat Bocce creates a style of play that stands alone.

Here are the elements that make Flat Bocce stand apart.

1. The Flabs: A Completely Different Throwing Object

Traditional bocce uses rigid balls that roll along the ground. Flat Bocce uses soft, flexible hexagonal discs called Flabs.

This single design change alters the entire experience.

Because Flabs are flat and flexible, they can be thrown many ways in a variety of environments: Tall arcs like lawn darts to stick in sand, snow, or tall grass, soft underhand flop shots to land flat on ledges or tabletops, overhand drop shots to get over obstacles but land softly, power slides to get under tables and chairs

Players quickly learn that mastering the Flab is part of the challenge. That learning curve creates a satisfying sense of progression as players discover their own style.

The hexagonal design also makes the game visually distinctive and easier to measure precisely.

2. Overlapping: A Strategic Layer That Doesn’t Exist in Bocce

In bocce, knocking another ball away is the primary strategic move.

Flat Bocce introduces a completely different mechanic: overlapping.

Because the pieces are flat, one Flab can land directly on top of another. This is new in Bocce and is used similarly to Bocce in that underlying flabs are canceled out, similar to how a bocce ball would be knocked out of the way.

3. The Instant Win: “Flabocce!”

Flat Bocce also includes a dramatic scoring possibility.

If a player lands a Flab perfectly on top of the Jack, completely covering it, the game ends instantly. This is called a Flabocce.

Think of it like a hole-in-one in golf, mixed with a walk-off home run.

It’s rare.
It’s exciting.
And when it happens, everyone notices.

That moment gives the game a built-in highlight that keeps players engaged, because no matter where your score sits, every shot is a chance to win the game instantly.

4. The Scoring Zones

Instead of simply measuring the closest piece, Flat Bocce uses concentric scoring zones on each Flab.

These zones allow the game to reward more precise shots:

  • Crossing into zones earns additional points (2, 3 or 4)

  • Covering zones earns even more points. (5,6)

The zones also make measurement fast and visual, so players can quickly understand what happened without complex calculations.

5. A Court That Can Exist Anywhere

Traditional bocce requires a fairly specific playing surface.

Flat Bocce removes those limitations.

Because the Flabs are soft and don’t roll like balls, the game can be played almost anywhere:

  • Beaches

  • Backyards

  • Airports

  • Basements

  • Hotel Rooms

  • Campsites

Players simply place the Jack and start throwing. Games in small spaces are very defensive with a lot of overlaps. Games in large spaces are lower scoring with big impressive shots. The more objects in the arena the better!

This limitless court concept is one of the reasons Flat Bocce works so well at family gatherings, beaches, breweries, and camps.

6. A Game Designed for Everyone

One of the most surprising aspects of Flat Bocce is how quickly people of different ages and abilities can play together. The flabs are soft and light, so safe for young kids and not a burden to older players.

The rules are simple enough for young kids to understand within minutes, but the strategy and throwing techniques create depth for experienced players.

It’s common to see:

  • kids playing with grandparents

  • friends playing at a brewery

  • competitive players developing serious throwing techniques

That wide accessibility is part of what makes the game special.

7. Portable by Design

Flat Bocce was intentionally designed to be extremely portable.

A standard kit weighs about one pound and fits easily in a backpack, beach bag, or even a jacket pocket.

That portability changes the way people use the game. Instead of planning an event around it, players often discover moments to play wherever they happen to be.

A New Take on a Classic Idea

Flat Bocce isn’t trying to replace bocce. Instead, it takes the core idea of a target-throwing game and reimagines it.

The Flabs.
The overlapping strategy.
The scoring zones.
The instant win.
The limitless court.

All of these pieces come together to create something familiar enough to learn quickly—but different enough to feel completely new.

And once people play their first game, they usually realize the same thing:

Flat Bocce isn’t just bocce with different pieces.

It’s an entirely different game.
