The grandkids are here, and you’d like to do something together before the visit disappears into meals and screens.

Finding the right activity can take some negotiation. The youngest wants something simple. The older kids want a challenge. You’d like to participate instead of spending the afternoon keeping everyone else entertained.

Start with a game where the goal is easy to see.

Give everyone the same target

In Flabocce, our flat version of bocce, players toss soft discs toward a target called the Jack. Getting close is something a new player can understand by watching a throw.

For the first round, focus on that goal. Give everyone a chance to practice. Introduce the full scoring and overlap rules as the group becomes comfortable.

There’s no prize for delivering the entire rulebook before someone gets to play.

Agree on a distance that works

For casual family play, choose throwing distances around the people taking part. You might start a young beginner closer to the target and give experienced players a longer shot. Agree on those adjustments together before you begin.

That keeps the challenge visible and the expectations clear. The best setup is one where everyone has a meaningful turn and can see what they’re trying to improve.

Choose a suitable space with clear footing and room for the throws. Outdoors might mean a section of backyard; indoors might mean an open floor area after a little furniture rearranging.

Leave room for a rivalry

You don’t need to manufacture a big family moment. Sometimes it starts with a grandchild landing a shot just inside yours, then checking your face to make sure you noticed.

The next visit has a little history attached. Someone remembers who won. Someone wants another chance. You have something to pick up together without needing to plan a whole day around it.

Flabocce gives the group a shared target. What happens around it belongs to your family.

Bring a kit to the next visit and find your family’s favorite way to play.
