You finally get everyone in the same place, and someone asks what you’re going to do.
Apparently, that’s your department too.
You’ve handled the food, the sunscreen, the extra sweatshirt, and whatever happened to the other shoe. Choosing an activity can feel like one more task standing between you and actually enjoying your family.
Family fun needs a lower barrier to entry.
Make starting the easy part
An activity has a better chance of happening when you can explain the goal while people are already trying it. Keep the first round simple. Pick a throwing spot, show the target, and let everyone take a turn before getting into every scoring detail.
That’s an easy way to introduce Flabocce, our flat take on bocce. Toss the target, called the Jack, then try to land your soft playing discs—the Flabs—closest to it.
There’s more to the full game, including overlaps that cancel shots. But the first thing a new player needs is a target and a reason to try again.
Let the game fit the afternoon
Choose the throwing distance for the people playing. Start nearby with younger beginners. Move farther back when the group wants a challenge. If attention starts wandering, finish the round instead of forcing a marathon.
Keep the kit where it can actually get used: with the beach things, near the back door, or alongside the games you reach for on a rainy afternoon. Flabocce packs flat and works indoors or outside, so it can join the day you already have planned.
You still get to choose a suitable playing area. You just don’t need to build an entire outing around the equipment.
Take your turn too
The moment to aim for is small: you’re lining up a shot, your kid is explaining why you’re definitely going to miss, and nobody is asking you to organize the next thing.
You’re in the game with them.
Explore Flabocce kits and make room for a little play in the day you already have.
